What is Ayurveda?

The word “Ayurveda” is translated from Sanskrit which means The Science of Life.
Ayurveda is a comprehensive, holistic, traditional health care system that originated in India over 5000 years ago. It consists of a number of disciplines including diet, herbal medicine, acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, balancing of energy, yoga and meditation.

According to Ayurveda, the human body is maintained and balanced by 3 factors, Vata (wind or air), Pitta (fire or heat energy) and Kapha (water). Together these are called Tridosha.
Each Dosha is made up of 1 or 2 of the 5 basic elements of Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
For the body to perform at its best, it is important for the Tridosha to be balanced.
Vata-Pitta-Kapha are present in every cell, tissue and organ of the body. They differ in permutations and combinations in every person.

Vaidh (Ayervedic Doctor) checks “Nadi” (Vein in hand) and senses your Tridosha which indicates certain characteristics of problems pertaining to the person. So according to your Tridosha the Ayurvedic doctor will suggest or prescribe ayurvedic medicine.

Ayurvedic Medicines are Natural, Herbal and Organic and have no side effects. This medicine helps to treat diseases from its roots. The results are not instant but will bring permanent relief to the problem.

Ayurvedic Medicines use a variety of products and practices. Ayurvedic products can be made of either herbs only or a combination of herbs, metals, minerals or other materials as in the Ayurvedic practice called ‘Rasshastra’.

Many Ayurvedic practices predate written records and were handed down by word of mouth. Three ancient books known as the Great Trilogy were written in Sanskrit more than 2000 years ago and are considered the main texts on Ayurvedic Medicine. (Charak Samhita, Shushrut Samhita and Astang Hriday).
